The ‘incidental’ mentor
Chris Bell was only an “incidental mentor,” he says. With his wife and grown children, he had volunteered to serve as a “friendship family” when Eunice Naswali came to the United States in 2004.“I've learned more from her than she's learned from me,” Bell says. “The rewards far exceed the effort.”
Although his specialty is in civil engineering, Bell encouraged Naswali early on to pursue an internship in the Multiple Engineering Cooperative Program (MECOP). She has completed one internship and started her second in the summer of 2008. Eventually, she wants to return to her native Uganda to help tackle its problems with power generation and distribution to remote areas.
